RECAP: 2019 AAU Junior Olympic Games

The 53rd AAU Junior Olympic Games is officially wrapped after 11 days of competition. This year, the games was the largest and most exciting yet. More than 15,000 participants traveled to Greensboro, North Carolina bringing friends, family, and tourists into the area.

GREENSBORO, N. C. – The 53rd AAU Junior Olympic Games is officially wrapped after 11 days of competition. This year, the games was the largest and most exciting yet. More than 15,000 participants traveled to Greensboro, North Carolina bringing friends, family, and tourists into the area.
17 different sports were featured, including Swimming, Sports Stacking, Karate and Trampoline and Tumbling. Additionally, the AAU’s marquee track and field event took place at BB&T Stadium. A record breaking 13,601 athletes competed in the oval, marking the largest youth track meet in the world.
Competition was at an all-time high out on the track. 24 records fell this year, compared to last year’s 17. Some highlights were Michaela Rose, who shaved almost two seconds of the Girls 15-16 year old 800 meter record, landing a 2:05.53. Victor Jaimez-Solorio (8 and under) shattered the 1500m record by 11 seconds with a 5:07.14. The oldest record to fall this year was the 1996 12 year old Girls 4x100m relay time, which the Virginia Elite Sport League relay team beat the outstanding record by .08 seconds (48.92).

Baton Twirling shined through another year with five different competition divisions- novice, beginner, intermediate, advanced and elite. The largest participation was in the 10-12 year old novice group, in which Kylie McClusky walked away with the gold medal. In the advanced (16-18 year old) group, Kaythleen C. Chace took home the title of AAU Junior Olympic Champion.

As part of the AAU Junior Olympic Games, AAU and USA Field Hockey teamed up to organize a four-day field hockey tournament at Kentner Stadium. Seven teams played in a round-robin format, and Team Black emerged as the victor, going 4-0-2.

Cornhole held its exhibition event at the 53rd AAU Junior Olympic Games. Athletes and coaches from all participating sports had the opportunity to try their luck on the boards, as well as learn techniques from the professionals.
